Good morning!

I wanted to let everyone know this will be my last EB Watch List Update Report with Tom Bowley getting ready to provide his comprehensive Daily Market Report (DMR) to members starting next Monday. While Tom's duties as Chief Market Strategist at EarningsBeats.com will begin on Monday he will continue transitioning from StockCharts.com through month end and we look forward to a smooth process but appreciate your patience over the next few weeks. Exciting!

Market Update:

The bulls don't feel like turning the momentum over to the bears with the Dow and S&P higher with the NASDAQ slightly lower. Over the course of 10 days traders have gone from being quite nervous to being much less worried with the VIX being at its lowest level since the end of July. Making this rally of late more impressive is it's taking place in September. But, there's still a lot of time left in what has historically been a rough period for stocks. None of the major indexes are "officially" technically overbought though Stochastics are 97 on the S&P showing a pullback might not be so bad. But something positive started developing this morning with the 20 day moving average crossing back above the 50 day on the S&P, generally a bullish sign. Ditto on the Dow. So far the NASDAQ has continued to lag the broader market; if traders suddenly decided to put more capital into tech stocks that could be a catalyst for the overall market to move higher. The S&P remains one minor run from getting back to its all time high of 3027. It's often tough to climb above an all time high the first time around. And with the S&P already stretched some it could be more difficult. But if the bulls somehow find a way to clear that 3027 level it's hard to say what might come next. To the downside the 2950 level is now a very important technical level to hold should we see any sudden selling.

CECO - Stock is higher by 1.6%. I have noticed the 20 day moving average converging on the 50 day from above and a cross below could be bearish. Stock really needs to clear its 20 moving average currently at $20.25, which would be bullish. We'll keep our stop at any CLOSE below $19 and it that changes we will let you know.

Good morning!

Market Update:

Already an interesting day let alone morning as all of the major indexes are higher but off session highs. At one point the market was hanging out then the rumors started flying about further trade talks which saw stocks spike. Then not too long after those rumors were debunked with the market losing a lot of the early gains. At the same time, the S&P has moved back above 3000 for the first time since August 1 with the VIX at its lowest since then as well as trader optimism has improved. But the reality is the S&P is right where it was six weeks ago. Still, at the moment the bulls should be pleased with what they are seeing with the S&P one nice spurt from hitting its all time high of 3027. It's worth noting that at its high of the day the Dow was within about 100 points from its all time high as well. Only the NASDAQ is lagging at the moment with traders seemingly wanting to focus more on non-tech stocks. If that were to change it could be a nice boost to the overall market. Worth pointing out; the 20 day moving average is converging on the 50 day on all of the major indexes, particularly on the Dow and S&P and a cross above the 50 day would have to be seen as bullish. You can bet the bulls will be aiming to reach that 3027 level on the S&P where there's likely to be strong resistance. To the downside, 3000 is now support with 2975 the next level of support below it.

Dear Members.

Good morning!

Market Update:

Stocks are higher, the VIX is lower, Treasury yields may have put in a bottom, all of the major indexes are above all key technical levels, all positive for the market with all of the major indexes higher. Yet the sharp correction in some highly visible growth stocks has kept the NASDAQ from advancing in any significant way and the S&P has gone nowhere for the past six weeks. Yet the bears must be frustrated as the bulls have thwarted any major attempts to take the market lower, especially during a historically lousy month for stocks. We're at one of those times where traders are looking for any reason to go long or short; trade deal news, interest rate news, positive/negative earnings news, positive/negative economic news. Otherwise the market is likely to remain in consolidation mode. Yesterday's high on the S&P was 2989 so that is now resistance with 3000 next. To the downside the S&P got as low as 2967 and if that were to go 2948 (the 50 day moving average) would be next. So overall a mostly positive environment for stocks with the market remaining vulnerable to any sudden, negative tweet or unexpected news.

Dear Members.

Good morning!

First, we had a GREAT turnout for our webinar last night where Tom Bowley laid out the services EarningsBeats.com will be offering when he is back on board full time as Chief Market Strategist. And, our switch from Adobe to Zoom was a great success! In fact, we are in the process of putting together a summary of yesterday's webinar along with a link to the recording that will be sent to all of you later today. So stay tuned!

Market Update:

In yesterday's Market Update I pointed out that this might not be the best time to deploy fresh capital into stocks. The reason I pointed that out was because all of the major indexes had bounced substantially off the recent bottom and because we started to see some weakening of the Relative Strength in some sectors. In fact, even though the overall market has not pulled back much, some former leaders have been hit hard with profit taking kicking in - i.e., cashing in on some of the big winners. We've certainly seen some of that in our three portfolios. But I need to point something out there as well. The Model, Aggressive and Income portfolios are not meant to be actively traded. The concept is to hold them for the full 90 days between Top 10 Stock Picks events which is different than our trade alerts which ARE meant to be traded more actively. In fact, I point to number 6 under the "commonalities of each portfolio" as described in the Portfolios section of our site: "We do not try to time entry and we do not use stops. We buy the 10 stocks the day they're announced and we hold them for a full three months." I wanted to share this since we get a lot of questions from members regarding stops. And our thinking is that over the course of the 90 days enough of the stocks that "make the cut" will ultimately outperform to offset any losers as traders gravitate to them. And as far as trade alerts go, we currently have one active alert as we continue to err on the side of caution; the market remains volatile even though the VIX is well off its recent highs. As far as the market goes it's a mixed picture with the Dow and S&P remaining above all key technical levels while the NASDAQ has moved back below its 50 day, at least on an Intra Day basis. And the NASDAQ is where we are seeing a lot of technical damage on individual stocks. So it is important for the S&P to hold its 50 day, currently at 2947. Then not far below that is the 20 day, currently at 2930 and if that were to go we could be looking at a retest of the recent lows. Bottom line; we should watch to see what happens as the day progresses, err on the side of caution then revisit once the market opens tomorrow.

Dear Members.

Good morning!

It's Webinar Day! And you are invited to join me and Tom Bowley for a "Sneak Preview: The New and Improved EarningsBeats.com" as we explain our product and service offerings and how they can benefit YOU! And we've switched platforms from Adobe to Zoom in an effort to enhance the overall experience. If you want to join us today, save this link: https://zoom.us/j/703314237 The webinar room will open at 4:00 PM Eastern and will begin at 4:30 PM. Remember also that the webinar will be recorded for those of you unable to attend the live event.

Market Update:

Another positive day for the bulls as we begin a new trading day and week with all of the major indexes higher. The bulls got a nice assist when all of the major indexes cleared all key technical levels last week and since then they have had the advantage. It also helped that the VIX moved below all key technical levels though it is up 2% today as traders start to wonder how long the current rally might last. If the bulls are able to maintain control of the action the next level of resistance will be at 3000. The S&P got as high as 2989 today so it's certainly in sight. To the downside the first key level of technical support will be the 50 day, currently at 2947. So a fairly narrow trading range and we might just see some consolidation here as traders try to determine if there's much upside left in the short term or if it's time to take some profits. Overall bullish but maybe not a time to be deploying too much fresh capital to the long side.

Market Update:

The bulls are enjoying another day of higher prices with all of the major indexes in positive territory. At the same time the VIX is down another 5% as traders embrace a more positive market environment. Traders took note when all of the major indexes in unison cleared their all key technical levels and since then stocks have continued to move higher. Now the bulls are hoping to hold on to the early gains and looking to clear yesterday's high on the S&P of 2985 with an eye on 3000, a level not seen since August 1. The move higher today comes in spite of a weaker than expected jobs report this morning; so traders seem to be shrugging off what might be considered bad news, hoping that the Fed takes note when they make their interest rate decision the next time they meet. Though the market is higher, traders still need to watch to see if recent gains hold with key support on the S&P now just below 2950. Still, a positive picture at the moment as we head into the weekend.

Good morning!

First, mark your calendars for next Monday, September 9, when we'll be hosting a webinar, "Sneak Preview: The New and Improved EarningsBeats.com" to explain how our product and service offerings going forward can benefit you and as Tom Bowley transitions back to EarningsBeats.com.

Market Update:

The bulls should be quite pleased today with all of the major indexes higher and as they move back above all key technical levels in unison. The VIX is lower by over 8% as it moves back below all key technical levels as traders cheer the possibility of a trade war truce with China. Naturally the skeptics will wonder if the early gains will hold or will we see another bout of selling on the rally? Of course it's possible but the bulls will point to the fact that they have now regained the technical control. It is impressive that the S&P is now one more day like today away from getting back to its all time high when less than two weeks ago the bears were painting a pretty bleak picture. But all of the sudden we have a new trading range on the S&P of 2945 to the downside (the 50 day) and 3027, the all time high. But first the bulls will need to clear the 3000 level and they need to hold on to the bulk of today's gains if they hope to get more traders off the sidelines. But at least for today the bulls can claim full bragging rights and now we'll see if they can build on this positive momentum into the close.

Dear Members.

This is an abbreviated report today as we are on Hurricane Watch and I wanted to get something out early just in case we lose power. Also to let everyone know that I plan on issuing a report tomorrow but will play it by ear.

It turns out there's not a lot to report today. Yes the market is higher but going nowhere fast as the S&P trades between its 20 and 50 day moving averages; no major breakout and no major breakdown. The bulls will argue that this is actually positive action given everything that's been thrown at the market lately. And in some ways they make a good point. The bears will point to the fact that the market has been unable to gain any traction since they gained technical control. Also a good argument. Which leads to the fact that it's pretty much a stalemate right now. What might change things? First, the VIX remains too high; those who are long are ready to bail at a moments notice. Next, both the NASDAQ and S&P need to CLOSE above their respective 50 day moving averages, 8042 and 2943, respectively, as that would shift the technical advantage back to the bulls. To the downside the S&P got as low as 2891 yesterday which also happens to be below the 20 day. Should that go then we could possibly see a revisit in the 2850-60 range. So it still makes a lot of sense to lay low here until something gives.

That's it for today.

John Hopkins

Dear Members.

Good morning!

Market Update:

It's not Monday; it just FEELS like Monday as we begin a new trading day, week and month, with all of the major indexes lower. Right from the opening bell stocks have been under pressure. Blame tariffs; blame a contracting Manufacturing report; blame September, a historically rough month for the market. Whatever the case traders are in a selling mood with all of the major indexes now back below their respective 20 and 50 day moving averages, turning the technical advantage back over to the bears. We've also got the VIX back over 20; increased fear into the new month. So what's next? First, the 20 day on the S&P is just beneath 2907, so that's a key level to watch. Next, with the VIX back over 20 it could be hard to convince traders to put additional capital to work. Accordingly it continues to make sense to wait for even cheaper prices or a recovery strong enough that takes some of the risk out of being long the market.

Market Update:

The recent bull checklist has been something like this. First, stop the bleeding; check. Hold the 200 day on any selling; check. Next, get the VIX below 20; check. Clear the 20 day moving average on any rebound; check. Clear the 50 day moving average to regain control of the market; still in progress. This last checklist item was in sight this morning as the S&P got to 2940 before pulling back some with the 50 day at 2945. And the 50 day could well end up being the "line in the sand" for both the bulls and the bears, especially as the month of August comes to an end and we enter the historically weak month of September and ahead of a long holiday weekend. In fact, one item that so far has cleared the checklist - the 20 day - currently at 2907 - really needs to hold here for the bulls to have at least some technical advantage. Because if that goes it could quickly lead to more traders heading to the sidelines. The bounce has been nice but we will continue to proceed with caution.

Good morning!

Market Update:

The market got off to a very nice start as comments from China gave traders hope for some type of trade resolution with all of the major indexes higher. So far all of the major indexes have moved back above their respective 20 day moving averages on the S&P, something the bulls know is critical to have any shot at regaining the momentum. The VIX is lower by 6% but it's still stubbornly staying above all key technical levels as traders remain skeptical, wondering if any early gains will hold. I did observe something around 10:30 that has been a hallmark of recent action. The NASDAQ fell 30 points in a matter of seconds. What was that? A tweet? A program trigger? Market Makers trying to spook longs? Really hard to say but the type of movement that has pushed a lot of traders to the sidelines. Let's be clear about one thing; the market has gone nowhere all month long. In fact the S&P closed at 2980 on July 31. At its high today it was 2924. So if you happened to have moved to the sidelines a month ago you haven't missed anything and in fact likely protected your capital. At a minimum the bulls need to hold the 20 day on the S&P, currently at 2904, if they hope to have any chance at taking stocks higher. And if they do succeed the next key hurdle will around 2945 which represents the 50 day moving average. To the downside if the S&P does close back below the 20 day the bears will maintain the upper hand.

Good morning!

Market Update:

The VIX remains at elevated levels, over 20 at the moment, as traders now have 2-3 fingers on the sell button just in case things get ugly. Interestingly, even with the big swoosh lower on Friday and with the whipsaw action of late, none of the major indexes are near being oversold. Is there any good news? At least the S&P has held above the recent lows and we're seeing some buying on the dips. But all of the major indexes remain below all key technical levels; the bears so far aren't giving an inch and each time it looks like the bulls have some traction the whip sawing starts again. And it's why we have gotten ultra conservative on the alert side. Just look at EHTH - our lone alert for some time - a real winner over the past year that was issued as a trade alert earlier in the week with two entry levels and a tight stop. And stop out it did, down 2.8% between the blended price. But today it's moved even lower which could continue should the market and sector move lower. I'm pointing this out to emphasize the importance of honoring stops. NO ONE likes a losing trade but when we set a stop level there's either a price or technical reason. And looking back historically, even during those times when we saw trade alerts stop out, those losses have generally been contained. So even if you have 2 or 3 stocks stop out at a loss of 2-3% it only takes one strong winner to balance things out. And this in turn increases your chances of producing higher Risk Adjusted returns. Problem is at the moment the "big scores" are very difficult to come by. So we will continue to be very selective on trade alerts with tight stops or a high enough reward to risk to make something worth pursuing. In the meantime, the S&P got as low as 2853 today so that is now support To the upside we're likely to see some resistance should the S&P get anywhere near 2900.

Good morning!

Market Update:

Currently, there's nothing technically healthy about this market with all of the major indexes giving up a lot of the early gains as they move into negative territory. Just like yesterday the VIX is higher as traders question whether the lows of the other day will do the trick. And now we're seeing traders are just as happy to take any profits on bounces. Right now the S&P is trading between its 50 day at 2946 and its 200 day, currently at 2803. Yesterday's low was 2856 so that is a level we should watch as a close below that level could lead to the next level of support near 2822. Bottom line at the moment: It's a very good time to lay low here. If you feel the need to trade perhaps consider fewer shares, tight stops. Be very selective. Take profits as they come along. Hold on to some cash in case things do get ugly.

Good morning!

Market Update:

Friday was about as raw a day as we've seen in a while, just as the bulls were hoping to clear some key technical levels only to see the bears come out in full force to take control of the action. Whatever confidence traders had for a sustained rally pretty much went down the tubes and in spite of today's bounce the technical advantage lies squarely with the bears. We should pay particular attention to the VIX which is higher today in spite of the rise in the market. That's a clear signal that traders don't have much confidence in the market in the near term. Though the S&P did not quite touch the most recent low of 2822, it got close. So that is a key level to watch. More importantly is the 200 day moving average, currently at 2803, a level the S&P has not been below since the beginning of June. Will it ultimately get there? I think there's a decent chance. I'm certainly going to be watching to see how the market closes today and opens tomorrow. With all of the instability "out there" traders are going to go out of their way to protect their capital which right now should be priority number one.

Good morning!

First, I wanted to let you know that we just added a FAQ section to the EarningsBeats.com site. It's still a work in progress- there's still plenty to add - but we've at least addressed those questions we get most often. And a big shout out to Erin Webber who helped us get it off the ground!

https://www.earningsbeats.com/public/FAQ.cfm

Market Update:

I'm doing something I don't usually do and that is to cut and paste a few sentences from yesterday's market update. Here they are. "We could be at a near term "do or die" moment; probably not so dramatic but two key levels approaching; 8048 on the NASDAQ and 2946 on the S&P, both representing respective 50 day moving averages. These levels are important since the bulls have been unable to climb above since the beginning of the month which has kept traders from getting overly aggressive. And it's one of the reasons we have held off on trade alerts; the market hasn't gone anywhere recently. So these are the levels we are keeping an eye on to see if the bulls can build on the recent momentum. In the meantime let's see if the 20 day on the S&P, currently at 2918, holds on any selling. If it doesn't then the technical advantage remains with the bears." I'm going out of my way to point this out since the NASDAQ got exactly to 8048 yesterday and the S&P almost touched 2940 before stalling. Then lo and behold this morning; more tariffs and all of yesterday's gains and more evaporated and all of the major indexes quickly fell back below their respective 20 and 50 day moving averages. This whipsaw type action might be great for day-traders but not so good for those who are looking for higher reward to risk opportunities without worrying about stops coming into play out of nowhere and profits disappearing just as quickly. Traders are also straining their ears listening for any clues from Fed Chairman Powell who is speaking at Jackson Hole today to see if he'll strike a more dovish tone or stick to his guns and remain more in a "wait and see" mode. It's good to see the S&P at least trying to hold its 20 day and the S&P trying to do the same. But...how long does this last? Plain and simple; this is not a stable market and at the moment the bears have to be respected. And if we do issue any trade alerts they are likely to have slimmer price targets and tighter stop losses. But remember that cash is a position too and patience can be rewarded. Also remember we have our 3 portfolios - Model, Aggressive and Income - which are meant to take the emotion out of the trading process for those looking for less day to day drama. Bottom line: we are going to remain cautious until we see something that changes the current narrative knowing there will be plenty of even better opportunities at the right time.

Market Update:

I'm going to be out of the office later today so am providing a brief and early update this morning. The market could get off to a positive start as the bulls try to keep the rally of late going. Good morning!

Market Update:

Tech stocks are leading the market higher today with all of the major indexes showing nice gains with both the NASDAQ and S&P trying to stay above their respective 20 day moving averages while the Dow continues to play catch up. The bulls are hoping that the early gains stick while the bears are hoping we see a repeat of yesterday with weakness into the close. If the gains can hold here then next up would be the 50 day moving averages on both the NASDAQ and S&P, 8048 and 2946, respectively. But the day's early here and as we saw yesterday a lot can happen by the time the market closes. So let's watch and see if the S&P can actually close above its 20 day first, currently at 2918, or if we'll see some fading into the close.

Dear Members:

Good morning!

Market Update:

There's a battle going on right now between the bulls and the bears with the S&P trying to clear its 20 day moving average the NASDAQ slightly above and the Dow still below both its 20 and 50 day moving averages. Already this morning it looked like the market would be in trouble then buyers stepped in only to see red all the way around. Still, the struggle to even get back above key technical levels shows traders remain skeptical here, unlike what we saw from the June 3 bottom where any type of dip was bought up aggressively, leading to all time highs. If you look at a chart on the S&P you will see it hasn't gotten anywhere the past few weeks and remains well below its all time high. And, if you look at the action underneath the market, specifically a lot of stocks that had led the way higher in the past, they are struggling to make any progress with many of them way below their most recent highs. For sure - with a few exceptions - the big moves some individual stocks were making not long ago have cooled; profits are being taken more quickly. So the whipsawing continues. The 20 day on the S&P is currently at 2920 and if it can close above that level that should be seen as a positive. To the downside there should be support around 2894 and if that goes expect more selling. So that's the range at the moment we should keep an eye on.

Good morning!

First, I want to let everyone know that we will be sending out the Top 10 Stock Picks Webinar Room Instructions to members early afternoon. The webinar will begin at 4:30 pm eastern. We will also post room instructions on the Member Home Page. The webinar will be recorded for those unable to attend the live event.

Market Update:

The market got off to a strong start this morning with traders in a buying mood as we begin a new trading day and week. If you ask me if I think we're getting an all clear signal here my answer would be...no. Has the market made some progress since the most recent lows? Yes. The VIX is lower again by almost 6%, well off the recent highs, so some calming of nerves. But we also saw how profit taking kicked in some earlier in the session and there's still reluctance to go all in here on the long side. Both the NASDAQ and S&P have move above their respective 20 day moving averages, at least intra day. But what really matters is where they close. On the NASDAQ that would be 7984. On the S&P that would be 2919. If we can get a close above those levels the bulls would have something to work with and in the case of the S&P the next key level of resistance would be the 50 day, currently at 2945, where I imagine the bears will put up a big fight. To the downside 2864 is a level to watch on any pullbacks.

Good morning!

Market Update:

If you're a trader who thrives on volatility you've got to love what's been going on lately with all of the major indexes up nicely as we close out another trading week. On the other hand, if you are someone who gets dizzy when your stocks get whipsawed it's a good time to be holding some extra cash. Just this week we saw the Dow swing 1,000 points from high to low in 2 days. And the VIX is down by 12% today but its still above all key technical levels; nerves have calmed some but not enough. I do need to point out that today is options expiration day; my thought yesterday that the QQQ's might get back to 185 has played out so far with tons of put premium wiped out. But given the action of late what we're seeing today is by no means an all clear signal. The 50 day on the S&P is still 60 points above where it is now. It's going to take a lot of work for the bulls to climb back above that 2945 level. It is worth noting that the S&P got as low as 2825 yesterday matching the August 2 low and has so far stayed above the most recent low of 2822. It held where it needed to and then bounced. Now we'll see if these early gains hold into the close or if the profit taking we've seen of late will kick in right on cue.
