Good morning! Market Update: The market got off to a very nice start as comments from China gave traders hope for some type of trade resolution with all of the major indexes higher. So far all of the major indexes have moved back above their respective 20 day moving averages on the S&P, something the bulls know is critical to have any shot at regaining the momentum. The VIX is lower by 6% but it's still stubbornly staying above all key technical levels as traders remain skeptical, wondering if any early gains will hold. I did observe something around 10:30 that has been a hallmark of recent action. The NASDAQ fell 30 points in a matter of seconds. What was that? A tweet? A program trigger? Market Makers trying to spook longs? Really hard to say but the type of movement that has pushed a lot of traders to the sidelines. Let's be clear about one thing; the market has gone nowhere all month long. In fact the S&P closed at 2980 on July 31. At its high today it was 2924. So if you happened to have moved to the sidelines a month ago you haven't missed anything and in fact likely protected your capital. At a minimum the bulls need to hold the 20 day on the S&P, currently at 2904, if they hope to have any chance at taking stocks higher. And if they do succeed the next key hurdle will around 2945 which represents the 50 day moving average. To the downside if the S&P does close back below the 20 day the bears will maintain the upper hand.
