The other thing is both the Dow and S&P are so far within striking range of their respective 20 day moving averages. So the pressure on stocks today is largely focused on tech stocks, particularly some large market cap stocks like Google that reported earnings last night, Facebook, reporting tomorrow and Netflix. Apple is lower as well rounding out the pressure on the FANG stocks. It should be pointed out that some solid earnings were posted this morning from Caterpillar, Verizon and United Technologies, to name a few. Even Google beat earnings expectations yesterday but traders are being more cautious in case the stock, currently down over 4%, goes even lower. Though the VIX is flat today and below some key technical levels, volatility is taking its toll on traders. It's one of those times where getting involved in any trade brings along additional risk. This is why it makes sense to continue to be very selective and to keep stops tight; it's that or just stop trading until things settle down some. Even though both the Dow and S&P are not far from their respective 20 day moving averages they remain below their respective 50 day moving averages. There's no green light here. The bulls could possibly regain momentum if the S&P closed back above its 50 day, currently at 2689. Short of that expect things to remain dicey in the near term.
