Preparing For Our Next Group of Portfolio Stocks

We do a lot of research at EarningsBeats and much of it has to do with quarterly earnings. Last week, we saw the highest number of companies reporting quarterly results and things will now begin to slow down. However, here at EarningsBeats, we're speeding towards our next Portfolio DRAFT Day....keep reading

When Value Stocks Might Make Sense

Growth stocks have had a very big run heading into the upcoming earnings season and we've recently seen a bit of consolidation/selling among these stocks - and it might just continue. Semiconductors ($DJUSSW) have held up well and continue to push to the upside, but software ($DJUSSW) and internet ($DJUSNS) have both seen some profit taking recently....keep reading

It Seems It's Just A Matter Of Time
Earnings Beats Digest

When I think of aggressive growth stocks, my mind generally turns to semiconductors ($DJUSSC), software ($DJUSSW), and internet stocks ($DJUSNS). Recently, we saw a huge breakout from the semiconductors group. Last week, it was software that was able to close at a multi-month high. And now, I'm watching and waiting for internet to make their move and clear the early-February high:...keep reading

Opportunity Or Lost Cause?
Earnings Beats Digest

I'm generally an optimistic person, especially when it comes to the stock market. But there are always two sides to a stock's story. Dynatrace, Inc. (DT) was an earnings-season darling after posting revenues and EPS that easily surpassed consensus estimates. DT jumped about 23% in 5 days after that quarterly report. Software stocks ($DJUSSW) have continued moving higher, while DT has returned to the "scene of the crime" (not really a crime, just a test of gap support):...keep reading

The Best Of A Really Bad Bunch
Earnings Beats Digest

In Monday's EB Digest, I featured a company that I thought might report disappointing results - Rivian Automotive (RIVN). It had performed poorly relative to its automobile industry peers ($DJUSAU) and appeared to be discarded by Wall Street. Last night, RIVN reported revenues that fell way short of expectations and its production guidance was weak. Now we know why RIVN was disliked by Wall Street as it trades down more than 8% in premarket action this morning. Well, tonight's earnings is going to be all about software ($DJUSSW). Several former software darlings will be reporting quarterly results, many of which show awful relative strength, including Veeva Systems (VEEV) and Okta, Inc. (OKTA). If I had to pick one that might deliver better-than-expected results, I'd likely go with Splunk, Inc. (SPLK):...keep reading

The Marubozu Candle: The Bulls' Ultimate Weapon
Earnings Beats Digest

In Japanese, marubozu means "dominance". And when you look at supply and demand in the stock market, nothing screams dominance quite like a marubozu candle. A bullish marubozu candle opens at or very near the low of the day and closes at or very near the high of the day. It's simply a day of unrelenting buying and is much more powerful when accompanied by exceptionally-high volume. Many times we'll see these types of candles form with heavy volume after a big announcement like quarterly earnings results. Fiserv, Inc. (FISV) was one stock with such an announcement on Tuesday morning. Check out the stock market reaction:...keep reading

You Have To Draw Your Lines In The Sand
Earnings Beats Digest

If you're a trader, or you're considering becoming a trader, you have to understand that trading is a business and that your capital is your product. You can't give it away. That doesn't mean you can't have losses, because, believe me, you will have losses. But the key will be to keep those losses to a minimum. Don't allow small losses to morph into big losses. And that's much easier said than done. Humans are wired to always want to be right. When you sell at a loss, you're admitting that you made a mistake. But those admissions are critical to trading success. Nutanix, Inc. (NTNX) is a software company ($DJUSSW) that's been under a LOT of selling pressure the past two weeks after a massive move higher off its June low:...keep reading

Software Remains Weak Relatively Speaking
Earnings Beats Digest

On Tuesday, the S&P 500 finally closed above its 50-day SMA. It was the first time in nearly 3 months and sets the stage for higher prices ahead. Key price resistance from early June resides just beneath 4200, so there's still roughly an additional 6-7% potential rise to reach that level....keep reading
